Brexit: The Legal Process and its Implications for the UK and the EU is a summer school course that aims to go behind the scenes of Brexit, ignoring the politics of the matter and instead exploring the legal implications of the decision. In the United Kingdom, it is important to determine whether it is Parliament, acting as the accepted sovereign state power, or the Government, acting under the Royal opinion, to be the one to implement the new change. It also is important to consider which Parliament has to approve of the Brexit treaty’s terms. Because of this, major concerns and issues regarding the United Kingdom’s constitution have been raised, and the question of whether it respects the law of the United Kingdom has also been posed.
In this course, you will learn how to critically analyze the United Kingdom and EU case alongside the statements of EU officials. At the end of this course, you will be able to understand and explain the implications of Brexit for the United Kingdom, legally speaking, and you will be able to do the same thing for the EU as well. You will also be able to analyze critically the relationship between the legal and political issues in regards to Brexit.
In order to sign up for the course, you must have your Bachelor, Advanced Bachelor or Master’s degree. This course is meant for students studying the law of the EU, international relations or politics. Students must have basic courses completed regarding the law and institutions surrounding the EU. Being familiar with the fundamentals of comparative law will help but it is not a requirement.
